Light Screen Effect
This tutorial shows you how to add a light screen effect to your images. This effect works best with smaller-sized images.
Step 1
Open your selected image in Photoshop. For this exercise I am using a frigate bird.

Step 2
But before we can create a light screen, we need to create a new document with the dimensions, 300 pixels by 1 pixel (300 x 1). Fill it in with black. And do the following: Image > Canvas Size. A menu should pop-up like so:

Step 3
Change the setting from “inches” to “pixels” and set the height to 2, width is still at 300. Now you have a pattern that looks like this. Under the Edit tab, click on Define Pattern.

Step 4
After clicking on Define Pattern, a menu should appear like this. You can leave it named as ‘Pattern 1′ if you’d like, or give it a custom name.

Step 5
Going back to our original photo, make sure you create a new layer for your pattern.
Step 6
Going to your tools, click on the
(Paint Bucket tool). Notice on your toolbar that the setting is set to Foreground. In the drop down menu, select Pattern and tab over to the pattern drop down menu, selecting your custom pattern.
Step 7
Now you can use the new pattern you’ve created and “paint” the new layer you just created. Right now the Opacity level is set to 100%.
Step 8
To see the image below, lower the Opacity level to 20%.
And there you are, your final picture.
